Blog Tour: The Immortality Virus by Christine Amsden

Synopsis:

In the mid-21st century, the human race stopped aging. Those who know why aren't talking, and the few who are brave enough to ask questions tend to disappear. To an elite few, The Change means long life and health, but to the ever-increasing masses, it means starvation, desperation, and violence.

Four centuries after The Change, Grace Harper, a blacklisted P.I., sets off on a mission to find the man responsible for it all and solicit his help to undo The Change -- if he's still alive. To complicate matters, Grace's employer is suspected of murdering his father, and when the police learn of their connection, they give her a choice -- help them find the evidence they need to convict Matthew Stanton, or die. But if they discover Grace's true mission, they won't hesitate to kill her in order to preserve their shot at immortality.

***

This book sort of threw me for a loop. I really expected something different from what I got. Mainly, I think, because the cover confused me. I was always waiting for Grace to find the secret of immortality was locked in the genetic code of a young woman and she had to try to save her from, I dunno, bad guys. It wasn't until after I finished the book and took another look at the cover that I recognized what was going on. (And I'm going to be a bit nit-picky here and say the colors of the guns' rays in the book were yellow for stun and red for kill. I don't recall seeing a blue. Even in this particular fight scene.)

There were parts of the story I thought should have been developed a little more. There were other things that took a little bit more of the story than I thought necessary. However, I think those were just personal preferences.

I thought Grace was a great protagonist. She was tough and hardened, and yet sensitive and caring when appropriate. She even lamented things that she had to care about, like she couldn't help caring and couldn't stop herself from doing it. More than anything, I thought she was realistic. There were a few mentions of her being beautiful, and she definitely had quite a following of interested parties, but I had a hard time picturing her in my head, which made her a little harder to identify with. I thought the author did a great job making it so that Grace went through some really traumatic stuff; at the time she acted like it was no big deal, but it comes back and haunts her later. I thought that was a great detail.

Alex was a bit of an enigma at first. He was definitely likeable...or was he? In the end I think his character could have used just a bit more development. He was fine, but I think I just wanted more from the leading man that I'm supposed to fall in love with - or at least believe Grace would fall in love with.

The story was exciting. I'm not usually a mystery fan because I get lost in the details. This one had lots of action, and yes it was confusing at times, but it was definitely interesting. I thought the author handled the idea of immortality in a very interesting way. If we all lived forever, there would be massive over-population problems. I also thought it was great how the author showed the passage of time was no big deal for a person who could potentially live forever. Grace worked in the police station mail room for thirty years. Thirty years?! Yeah, well, it's not like she really needed to hurry up and get a promotion.

I really enjoyed the way the author explained certain technology aspects without really explaining them. I didn't feel like I was reading a textbook, but I wasn't lost trying to figure out what a holoset was. There was so much double-crossing that I lost track of who was supposed to be enemies with whom, so that was hard.

The end was a bit jarring, as far as it was left wide open for a sequel and subsequent installments. I'd be interested to find out what happens next but I admit I walked away feeling a little hungry for some closure.

All in all, this wasn't what I expected. It wasn't better, it wasn't worse. It was good. Definitely worth reading for those who enjoy a bit of science fiction and mystery.

Content advisory: semi-heavy language (a lot of instances of mild language, one use of heavy language). Lots of action violence and death, though very little gore. A bit of clean romance; mostly just a growing attraction between two characters.

Barnes & Noble (Paperback and Nook)

Excerpt:

“Check him for an ID chip,” McMillan said.

Grace checked both wrists, but didn’t find the tiny metal button that acted both as tag and as a neutral interface for portables. She also did not see any sign that such a chip had been ripped out of his skin by the same people who had stolen his clothing. This man had probably been born on the streets. “Nothing.”

“Good,” McMillan said. He subvocalized an instruction to his portable. It must have opened up a com link because a moment later he said, “Send a cleanup crew to my location beacon…no ID…10-4.”

McMillan turned to Grace. “All right, let’s go.”

“W-wait! Shouldn’t we find out what happened here? Someone murdered this man.”
McMillan actually laughed, a sound that infuriated Grace. He caught a glimpse of her face and the laughter died immediately. “Just like me. I bet I said all the same things my first day. It ain’t fair, is it?”

“So you’re just going to accept it? Accept a man being murdered in the middle of a crowd of witnesses? You’re going to accept not knowing his identity and not letting his family know he’s dead?”

“The cleanup crew will take fingerprints,” McMillan said. “The census gets almost everyone’s fingerprints. If they come up with a contact, they’ll let them know.”

“And if not?” Grace asked.

“Then he’ll join the ranks of the nameless, faceless dead. C’mon, let’s go.”

Grace didn’t move.

“Look, before the day’s out we’ll handle a dozen more like this. We don’t have time to ask questions or take statements. We don’t have time to properly examine the body or the area for clues – most of which have been taken away by other unfortunates.”

It took her a moment to find her voice. When she did, her words dripped out like acid. “Would we have had time if he’d had an ID bracelet?”

We would not have. We’d have called in the homicide team and they’d decide. Get in the car.”

This time, Grace complied, but she sat in stony silence as McMillan lifted off and began circling the area anew.

“It helps if you don’t think of them as human,” McMillan said after a while. “More than one officer has called this job pest control.”"

Author Interview and Giveaway!

Today we are very pleased to have Vanessa Morgan with us. She is the author of Drowned Sorrow and The Strangers Outside.

Her upcoming screenplay, A Good Man, will be released on April 15th. It's actually being turned into a French feature film by Radowski Films.

Here is a short blip of her bio, stolen straight from her webpage:

Vanessa Morgan was born May 24, 1975 in Vilvoorde, Belgium. She graduated from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and she first worked as a freelance journalist, a language teacher and a pet supply store manager before becoming a full-time writer. Her native language is Dutch, but she loves to write in other languages such as English and French.

Vanessa Morgan lives in Brussels, Belgium, where she is at work on a French vampire screenplay for Radowski Films and a comic book series starring her beloved cat Avalon.

And on to the interview:

It's great to have you Vanessa. So, tell us about your upcoming release, A Good Man.

A Good Man is a dark comedy with a few horror elements.  I could best describe it as American Psycho with a vampire. Some people have also compared it to the TV-series Dexter.  It's a fun and moving story and it turns the vampire myth completely on its head. It's not the kind of vampire story you've seen before and if you think you know how things will turn out, then think again.

It sounds pretty exciting! Can you tell us a little more about Louis as a character. Is he your stereotypical vampire?

Not at all. Have you already seen an old, Botoxed, self-conscious vampire with arthritis? Probably not. And that's just the beginning. Louis has several other traits that set him apart from 'normal' vampires. He's a funny character, obviously, but he's also touching and even a bit tragic at times.

Is A Good Man the first in a series?

I don't have the intention of turning it into a series, but who knows... Only the future will tell.

This is actually a screenplay. It's being made into a French feature film; will we be able to see it in the states?

Sure. It will be a big production with a French star cast, so it'll be available on DVD and it should make it to the American screens as well.

What made you decide to start writing?

Seeing movies and stage plays that I adored and recognizing something of myself in it. It's all about creating emotions and about sharing something that 'rings true'.

Can you tell us a little more about yourself?

I'm obsessed with my cat, horror movies, tea and spicy food. All the rest is secondary. I've come to a point where writing has become my day job, so that means that I'm fortunate enough to combine my job with everything I love.

When will A Good Man be available to readers and where can we get a copy?

The Screenplay of A Good Man will be released on April 15, 2012 and will be available in all the digital formats such as Kindle, Kobo, Nook etc. It will also be released in French as Un homme bien. The movie itself is still in preproduction, so you will all have to wait a little for that one, but the screenplay is an excellent way to have an exclusive preview.

Where can fans go to learn more about you and watch for upcoming releases?

I have a personal blog at http://vanessa-morgan.blogspot.com where I post updates about upcoming releases, pictures of book signings and extracts of guest posts. I'm also doing a cute web comic about my cat at http://avalon-lion.blogspot.com.

Vanessa is giving a way a copy of A Good Man to one lucky reader! Enter below, and a winner will be announced on Friday April 20th. You must verify your winning email address within 48 hours or another winner will be chosen.

I need help!

I was recently asked to host a book club discussion. This may not seem like a big deal, except...it's about MY book!

While I am thrilled and honored, I see a few problems with this:

1. I've never been to a book club before.
2. I've never hosted a book club discussion before.
3. See 1 & 2.

All of the discussion suggestions I've read online are pretty basic, like, "Who is your favorite character and why?" "Who is your least favorite character and why?" "What was the best part of the book?" "What was the worst part of the book?" Although I'd like to think I have a tough skin, it's more like a candy shell. I don't really want to know the worst character and the worst part of the book. Would it help me in the future? Probably. But that doesn't change the book I've already written. But, constructive criticism is inevitable. And really, is that what a book discussion sounds like?

I guess my biggest problem is that I don't want to sound like a doofus. The fact that I've never been to a book club kind of puts me at a disadvantage.

Are you a member of a successful book club? (ie, one that actually discusses the book and doesn't chat about the Bachelor for over an hour.) Are you an author who's hosted a book club discussion about your own book? Have you ever read a book and wanted to know what other people thought of it?

Please send me some ideas on questions to ask, how to steer the conversation, what topics to discuss...ANYTHING you think might be helpful. I really, really don't want to sound like an idiot in front of these women. Pass on the word to anyone you think might have some good advice for me.

Thank you so much!!

Feelin' Popular

Since I usually strive to be honest, I'm going to take a crack at it now. I have been deliberately neglectful of my blog for the last few months.

Why?

Well, most of you don't know me personally, so I'll just give you a quick synopsis. My almost two-year-old son is adopted. Recently, I underwent some extensive medical...uh..."stuff" and hip-hip-hooray! We're pregnant! With twins. No joke.

So, needless to say, I spend a lot of time curled around the toilet (or feeling like I need to be curled around the toilet). The other part of my time is spent taking care of my little guy.

With so little promotion of my blog and my writing, my Goodreads page and blog have become stagnant.

Until this morning.

I woke up to three friend requests and two followers on Goodreads and a few more blog followers.

Although I was pleased with my sudden increase in popularity, I was suspicious. "Something is up," I thought. I finally discovered what it was a few minutes later when I saw my picture on I Am a Reader Not a Writer.

For an interview and a chance to win a book from yours truly, CLICK HERE to read all about my awesomeness.

(Besides being honest, I'm also quite humble.)

And to my new readers, Welcome! I'm sorry it seems kind of boring around here. I'm trying to ease back into it. If I'd known you would all be coming so soon, I would have tried to pretend like I'm more entertaining. Pin It

News for me

So, this week is a big week for me. In a few days I have my first book signing! Hurrah! It's at a school in Utah - even though I don't live in Utah. Kind of a long story, but I have connections, and a school invited me to do an author presentation and then do a book signing. What could I do but say yes? :) It's not open to the public - sorry! - so I won't post any info online.

Next, I've got another review posted at Squeaky Clean Reads. I was thrilled with this review. Honestly, I worked pretty hard to make my book a clean read, so I was beyond pleased that it got such a good rating. Check it out here. Leave a comment and agree with how amazing my book is. I will love you forever.

Also, the amazing folks at SQC are hosting a fabulous giveaway by yours truly. You can head over and enter the giveaway here. Spread the word.

Lastly, I have decided not to accept any more books for review. I have a stack (literally) of books that need read and reviewed and the Summer Reads Contest to judge. Besides that, I've got a book to promote and a sequel to write. I've got a very full plate. I have to be a little more picky with my time, and though I love reading and reviewing, it just has to take back seat for a few months. I'm sad about this decision, but I feel like if I want to have a chance at being a good wife/mother/author, something has to get cut.

Sad, but true. Pin It

Q+A with yours truly

This Thursday, the 21st, you'll be able to catch me at From the Shadows.

Pretty cool, eh? I'm excited. Except, when I did the interview, I had no idea who I wanted to cast as Pyper or Kael. Now that I've had time to think about it and chew on it for a while, I've come up with some really good actors.

Check out my interview with E.J. Stevens, then stop by here and I'll maybe let you in on my new and improved dream cast.

Cheers! Pin It

A couple of things.

First of all, I woke up this morning to a fantastic surprise! An email from fellow Author (with a capital A) - Allie Burke. She has a three-book series, The Enchanters, and I won book one of the series: Violet Midnight. I'm beyond thrilled. I've been wanting to read this book for a long time now.

Thanks Allie! (Check her out and give her some blog love.)

**

Second, I got a cool email today from O'Dell at BookTwirps. I've been picked as an official judge in the YA New Summer Reads Competition!

Authors - do you have a YA book released between January 1, 2011 and August 1, 2011? Then this is your chance! See the submission guidelines here. Good luck! I actually considered entering The Gifted, but since I'm a judge in the category, I think it wouldn't be too fair. :)

I'll keep you updated with progress and reminders. I'm very excited about this opportunity. It's an honor.

**

Third, I got a knock on the door tonight, and was presented with another surprise. In honor of my book release, my friend brought me a cake:

(I'm the cutie on the right. I didn't even photoshop this picture at all, so you get to see my big toothy grin.)

Isn't that amazing?! She even used the colors of my book cover and the copied the cover's embellishments. Wow! Now THIS is friendship. Can you see there are even pages and a book mark? She is so sweet and fantastic.

Thanks, M! You're amazing.

**

And lastly...

TOMORROW (3/28) IS RELEASE DAY!!!!!!!!!! (Insert never-ending happy dance here)

That means I'll be up until well after midnight tonight making sure everything runs smoothly and that The Gifted shows up on Amazon and on the estore via the publisher's website. Luckily, my sweetheart let me take a nap today while our little guy was asleep. And hey, if I get drowsy, I've always got cake to keep me occupied! :) (That and Firelight)

See, lots of really exciting stuff! Sorry I crammed it all into one post, I just didn't think I could wait on any one of them. Pin It

I just thought I'd share.

I feel a little funny saying this, but here it goes: I have a website.

I read an article from about.com that said when promoting your book, the first thing you need to do is create a website and a blog. Notice the middle word there? And. Not or. And.

So, I created the blog first, then the website. Hey, the article never mentioned what order they had to come in.

There is really nothing on my website that isn't on my blog, but at least my presence is now on the internet. I keep changing the design of my blog trying to make it simple and not resemble my website too much. Bare with me during the "construction" phase of the blog...and probably the website as well.

Anyway, if you want to see my site, here is the address:

www.deborahandreasen.com

Pretty cool, huh?

I've been looking at other authors' websites trying to see what they post and such. It all varied so much that I couldn't find any common ground, really. Well, that's not true. I did realize that every author's personality was visible in their blog. I guess that makes my personality blocky and a bit empty.

Sigh.

I guess I'll find my way once I have more to add. Right now I have no interviews, no reviews, no additional books or projects. My presence in the writing world is somewhat in the newborn stage. Actually, I'm not even born yet, so I guess I should feel pleased that I had anything to put on my website! :)

By the way, suggestions would be helpful. Pin It

It's the little things.

As of right now, I have 15 "likes" on Facebook. I have 9 followers on blogger. And, get this, I have a fan on Goodreads! An actual fan! Yes, yes, yes, yes!

Who cares if he's a friend? I didn't have to ask him to be my fan, did I? For the record, no. I didn't ask him. His wife is one of my old roommates, and she periodically tells me that he's asking about my book. That sure makes a person feel good.

Yeah, right now, I'm feeling really good.

Thank you, thank you EVERYONE for being so supportive and so excited for me.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a cloud nine to float on. Pin It

Come find me

Today is a momentous occasion.

This morning I put The Gifted on Goodreads. You can find the page here.

You will see the release date and...ready? The cover! Yes. The cover art is available to the public for viewing. I am confident you will love it as much as I do. So much time, effort, blood, sweat and tears went into it. I didn't design it, but I've been working closely with my sister-in-law, who did design it. Even I don't know how much work went into it, but I can guess how many hours. It's been Kadie's part time job for the 10 days or so. And she has done a fantastic job. Seriously marvelous.  I could not be happier. I told Kadie to be ready, her cover art is about to be famous! (That's me being optimistic.) If you totally love the cover art, leave me a comment so Kadie will know she did a fantastic job.

So head over and check out the page for the Gifted. If you are a Goodreads member, please do me a favor and add it to your "to-read" shelf. The reason I put it on Goodreads was so that I can start circulating The Gifted and spark some interest. When we get closer to the release date, I will have giveaways on there. I will post reminders and links, so fear not.

I have my application in to Goodreads right now to merge my profile to an author account. It'll probably take a few days, they said. But then I'll be an author on Goodreads. I'm not sure I can handle the pressure, but I'll sure try:)

Update: I am now on Facebook! This is a page just for The Gifted. I'm not personally on there, so if you send me a(n ignored) friend request, please don't take it personally! Pin It

Media Mail

I ran across this random article about 13 Things Your Mail Carrier Won't Tell You. They're pretty good to know, but the one that really caught my eye was number four:

4. Media Mail is a bargain, but most of you don’t know to ask for it. Sending ten pounds of books from New York City to San Francisco through Media Mail costs $5.89, compared with $16.77 for Parcel Post. Besides books, use it to send manuscripts, DVDs, and CDs; just don’t include anything else in the package.

Cool! I can get a good deal when I send books through Media Mail - which I had never really heard of before. But what else caught my attention? One word: manuscripts. It's pricey to send your manuscript to publishers, but apparently not as pricey as I'd thought.

Also, with me doing all the promoting of my book, I'll be responsible for sending copies of my books to reviewers as well as giveaway winners. This will definitely save me some cash.

So keep all this in mind if you're sending your work to publishers or even a CD of pictures to your baby's grandparents. Pin It

Reaching out

Since I am in charge of marketing my book, I have to be a little creative. I found this article on About.com that has been really helpful. It has 7 easy things to do to promote your book.

The one I am really excited about is getting someone to review my book. I stumbled across an article on www.amazon.com that talked about how important it is to have your book reviewed by a top reviewer from their program. It gave some tips and advice on how to approach reviewers. I was so surprised. You mean, you want me to email them? By myself?!

Well, duh. Who else is going to do it?

So, I've been doing research. Long story very short, I found some awesome reviewers and I've contacted them to see if they're interested in reading The Gifted. I've already received one response. A big fat YES! Awesome! Now I'm just waiting on some of the others.

One reviewer specifically says she will not review self published books. But I sent her an email with my credentials (a review from publisher's weekly) and the book synopsis. I asked her if she would reconsider. The worst she can do is say no. And if she does say no, that's totally fine. She was completely up front about her policy, so it's not like I can expect special treatment.

Anyone else have any ideas on promoting The Gifted?

PS. There will be some giveaways. I plan on hosting one here and on Goodreads. Pin It
